Border crossing for us was not time consuming. The longest we had to wait in line was about 10 minutes to get into Alaska on the Alaska Highway. Questions are standard: fruit and vegetable, tobacco and alcohol, guns/ fire arms, and how long were/are you in Canada/ Alaska. When we crossed into Montana by Glacier National Park, the official also asked one additional question: What do you do for a living? and when I told him I was retired, he wanted to know what I did before I retired, and he also asked my partner what she did as well.
On the whole, crossing only took about 5 minutes because they have to check your passport on a computer. Oh, the Alaska crossing and crossing into the US also have camera's positioned on the four corners of the vehicle lane and one for underneath the vehicle, and the yellow posts you see are x-ray machines.
