I'm a US citizen planning a trip through Canada to the Lower 48 and want to transport some ammunition. I found the following Memorandum in the Canada Border Services Agency website. I wouldn't transport the ammo, legal amounts or not. When you present the paperwork, they're going to assume you have a gun and go looking for it. After all, what's the use of having the ammo if you don't have a gun?The guy I hunt with left his pistols stateside when traveling north, but he did have used brass with him to reload at home. When Canadian Customs found the used brass, they made the assumption he must have the gun also, hidden someplace, so they went all through his RV.Bill

I agree, Ship it. You just going to open a can of grief at the border.They always suspect a gun and will tear your rig apart to verify

I go to Manitoba every year and transport rifles and a reasonable amount of ammunition. It's very simple and if the crossing is not busy, 10 - 20 minutes at most.

I would have to agree with some others. Either have both or neither and I expect it will go easier at the border.Neither would be the best choice almost always.

I agree......YOU can transport up to 5000 rounds of small arms cartridges.
Question I have is WHY do you want to bring the ammunition?
Having the weapons mailed to a US Destination, participating in a competition shoot, etc.

I shoot but I would NOT take the chance of some border agent deciding that with that much ammo I must have weapons hidden somewhere.

I use to go to Mexico for Dove hunting......had to do all the paper work, declare weapons/ammo etc.
One mistake and it was NOT a happy experience.

Trackrig, there is no paperwork to present, as I understand the Memorandum. I guess I am required to declare I have ammo in the vehicle. And the reason I'm transporting ammo and no firearms is because we are moving and the moving company will ship firearms but no ammo.

I will be driving an SUV, not an RV so if they search it, no real problem to me. I actually expect they WILL search it. No sweat. Why would that be "opening a can of grief"?

I just want to be sure the Memo applies to me and what I'm doing.

Same here, moved to AK and back a few years ago. Had ammo, guns were shipped with the moving Company. Wasn't asked, didn't offer it up. Not illegal though.
