ATLANTA GA TO MA VIA BLUE RIDGE PARKWAY BUT AVOID I 95

We are driving to Atlanta GA and when we come home we want to avoid I95 and we want to go over the Blue Ridge Parkway. WE are doing this in a car so not worried about overpasses etc. We are going to go down so we get on 81 S and then down and end up on 85 and then 75 South to Atlanta. But coming back we want to be tourists. I will be during the week, not weekend.
  • Get out your arm weights and condition your arms well before the trip. Expect sore shoulders and upper arms after the first days driving on the parkway if you are doing the driving. If someone else is driving, be prepared to administer upper arm and shoulder massage. But have lots of fun, and be sure to do Chateau Morrisette at Meadows of Dan. Check their webpage for hours, and plan your trip to be there. Its on of the Must-dos on the parkway!
  • Allow plenty of time, speed limit is 45. and stop at the overlooks, always worth the time, and it lets the idiot who's been riding your bumper for the last 5 mile a chance to pass.
  • It's a pretty road to be sure; was just there a few days ago. The southern part is curvier and hillier (with more tunnels) than the northern part; I would start from the GSM National Park if possible.

The parkway is relatively slow going. Get the free map brochure and the free newsprint activity guide at an info station. There are a great many places to go on hikes of all different degrees of difficulty. Pack at least a lunch each day; restaurants are not at all plentiful, even along intersecting roads.

If the weather is rainy or foggy, the parkway is a lot less special than if it's a nice clear day.
