AZ 67 to North Rim of Grand Canyon.

The AZ highway web site and Grand Canyon NP website reads that the road from Jacobs Lake to GC DOES NOT open until 5/15. We want to dry camp on the NFS land off the highway on 5/10.

Is the 5/15 open date subject to weather or is it a firm date each year regardless of weather?
  • ADOT reports:
Highway reopens in the spring, usually around mid-May
so it sounds like there is some flexibility. It has been warmer than usual here in AZ this spring so it may open early.
  • If 67 is not open, 89A will be. Just east of Jacob Lake on 89A, there are numerous SF roads with boondocking opportunities. A toad to explore boondocking opportunities would be an advantage.

Yes, I know and Lee Ferry is the backup location, but we wanted to camp/see the north rim from FR 270T aka the East Rim.
  • Forest service districts have their own web pages, that include road and campground conditions and openings.

Found this east rim viewpoint page

FS gives 5/15 as the opening date for the campgrounds in this area. I can't find a detailed road conditions page (the kind I'm used to seeing at Washington FSD).
