Baltimore to West Point, NY

I'm looking for a recommended route from Aberdeen Proving Ground (just North of Baltimore, MD) to the US Military Academy at West Point. We drive a 32 ft. motorhome and tow a Jeep Liberty, and would like to minimize (not necessarily eliminate) toll roads and avoid NY City.

Any and all suggestions will be appreciated!
  • Thank you for the input. I've decided to use a slightly modified version of PawPaw's route. It will vary slightly because of my different starting point.

I understand how MapQuest works, but it doesn't consider length, height, weight or other restrictions associated with large RVs in creating a route. Nor does it provide first hand experience from driving the route. That is what I hope to get from the forum members.

  • Maryland and Delaware will ding you hard on tolls. The way to avoid is the 83 north out of Baltimore to Harrisburg, then 81 to 78; take that into NJ and pick-up 287 north. Then just go up the NY Thruway to US6 and you're there.
  • We drove Andrews AFB, Dover AFB, NavWepSta Earle, West Point (Round Pond) in April 2015.

We avoided tolls except for the bridge at Annapolis and from Dover to the state line.

We crossed into NJ on the Wilmington Bridge - where the toll is west-bound only. Up thru NJ on I-295 to I-195 to NJ-34. Then NJ-18 to I-287.

At the NY border, we avoided the New York Thruway/ I-87 by taking NY-17 to US-6 then NY-293 to Round Pond.

As noted - Dodge 2500 (Gas) towing a 36 ft TT.

    Nice drive the whole way.

You could go to Google Maps and put in the start/end points and click and drag the route to be to your liking.

But it's likely that no one from Google has actually driven this route in person and can give any worthwhile advice other than distance. Nothing like local knowledge.

  • To totally avoid tolls and NYC but add a few miles, take I-83 to Harrisburg, I-81 to I-80 to US209 to I-84.

Alternately, take I-78 out of Harrisburg to I-287 to I-87. I think you'll hit some tolls on this route, but the total mileage is less than the above (287 vs. 308)

Look this route over Not sure it works for everyone but we have taken it a few times over the years, avoids lots of issues but the little jog through Princeton and Rt 206 can be a test if the timing is wrong.

As I recall those roads continue to improve - but the traffic is pretty heavy during the wrong times of the day.

Hope this is of some help,
