bandon oregon

heading from Sacramento to Bandon Oregon

with my small TT, didn't really matter.
now a 30ft 5th wheel.
looking at going all the way i5 to Roseburg, then to Bandon
would going up and over the mountains in Ashland be an issue.

OR should I get over on 101 and go north.
thanks.
  • God bless you on your chemo.

We will be in Banning - God willing - for 8 days toward the end summer. We love it there. Will also be in Newport for a week and Cannon Beach for 3 weeks before that.
  • We go over Syskiyou summit all the time. We don't push it going up and tow haul works well going down. We just go slow with the trucks.
  • Bandon beach access at Bullards Beach State Park currently is difficult. Erosion has washed away the access path and there is now a steep high drop off to the beach from the restrooms. Face rock access is fine.
  • Asking if you can take I5 into Oregon is a bit like asking if you can take it to LA or take I80 to Reno. It's a freeway pass. Usually it's only an issue in the winter, when like other passes it might have snow.

CA20 to US101 might save a bit on grades, but otherwise it's a slower drive - more scenic if you like the redwoods and a bit of coast.
  • thanks all. we are running up there between chemo treatments so will want to keep off anything to winding.

If you can travel on a Sunday there will be fewer trucks on the pass.
  • To get to Bandon take I-5 to 42 west at Roseburg...takes you right there.

We don't do interstates so we'd take 101 all the way up. Take Hwy 20 from Sacramento.

Bullard's Beach State Park is great. Have a good trip!

    1. I-5 over toward Ashland Hwy. 138 west to 138 is shorter and quicker. Spend 1st night at 7 Feathers RV park in Canyonville. Make reservations! As long as your truck has sufficient power (i.e. At least a 3/4 ton truck) you will ever ok, just tasks it easy/relax going up hill. Make sure your brakes are good/excellent going down te hill. Use your trasmission to slow/control speed. I don't let my downhill speed go higher than 50 mph. It helps if you have an exhaust brake to control your speed.
    2. Or, take hwy 20 to 101 and head north. Ok if you are limited by time but would not be my choice.
  • We don't go all the way to Roseburg on the I-5N but instead take the 99 from Clarks Branch Road to the 42 to the 101S to Bandon.

    Stayed at Bullards State Park.
