Will be traveling from Durham to Gettysburg on September 12th and looking for best route to follow. Thought about US Highway 15 as an alternative to Interstates. Would like to avoid Washington traffic if possible! Any suggestions?

95-17-15 Leesburg has a bipass. We use this way all the time adds 10 mile on to our house and you would have to pick up 15 in Frederick MD anyway. When you go to Gettysburg, make a side trip down to Antietam. 81 to 30 is way out of your way.

drive I-95 to 17, over to Opal 15, up to PA. good road, mostly 4 lane, a little convoluted going around Leesburg but certainly a brazillion times better than going around DC.

Or 95 to 17 to 66 to 81 to 30 will get you there on 4 lane roads.

Not sure about US 15 below Virginia. If you go I-95 to Fredricksburg, VA and pick up Rt 17 to 15. Google shows it would add about 23 minutes to your trip. That would easily be made up when you add in DC traffic. I also told google to look at no highway and no tolls. It took a combination of 522 and 15 but it added 2 hours to the trip. I like the first option.
