Best route for Custer State Park to Fishing Bridge

If you want to avoid the strain on the truck, avoid the Bighorns. Without adding a lot of miles and taking the Bighorns out of the equation, go through Casper. Just use Google Map with Custer SP, Casper, Fishing Bridge as your points and it will route you the correct way. We had originally planned on going the Buffalo-Woland route in 2000 when I was pulling a 7k 30'TT with a 92 F350 but had to take the Casper Route because of wildfires along Hwy 16. It was an easy pull and we spent the night in Casper to break up the trip. In 2005 we came out of Yellowstone and did the Woland-Buffalo route back over to Custer but this time with a 35' 11k FW but pulling with a Dodge Cummings. It was an easy tow for the diesel, but I was so glad we had avoided it in 2000 even though I'm experienced pulling heavy loads in the mountains.

I love US 14A, but I have a light fifth wheel and a diesel truck with an exhaust brake. It is a fantastic drive through great scenery, but, as many others have said, better left to experienced mountain RV drivers.

I also would not go through the East Entrance to Yellowstone without stopping and spending at least a full day at the Buffalo Bill Heritage Center in Cody. It is probably the best Western (as in "The Old West") history, art, culture, and natural history museum complex in the world! If you haven't been there before, don't pass it up. I have been there multiple times and see something new each time. Trust me, it will be one of the highlights of your trip no matter how much time you think you have for a "side trip" on your way to Yellowstone or how much you "hate museums."

A few years back we took a 34 foot 5th wheel from Custer to the west entrance of Yellowstone through the east entrance and via 16, 20, 14 with out any problems other than it's a long driving day and in some areas slow going due to steep grades. I had a diesel with an exhaust brake so the grades weren't an issue. Google maps calls it 8 hours from Custer to Fishing Bridge but I believe it's closer to 10 or 12.

If I had to do it again I would spend the night in or around Cody.

We did that exact route last year with our 40ft 5th wheel...good route.

Thank you for that! That is the suggested route on mapquest as well, but you never know what you're going to get from that source. It's better to get advice from someone that has actually driven a large rig through the area.

That would be the easiest and quickest route. Don't be in a hurry in the Bighorns, and you will be fine.

From Grand Teton NP to Fort Robinson, Nebraska take 26 east out of the park to Casper, WY and pick up I-25.

Good map programs can show terrain, as contours or shading. Zoom in enough and see street level 360deg views. Also shaded national forests cover mountains.

If you are not super familiar with mountain driving, one route that I would avoid would be to take 14A from Burgess Junction, Wyoming to Lovell, Wyoming. This is a route for very experienced RV drivers or truck/trailer driver only. The road is super steep and crooked. It would be dangerous unless your rig is equipped with a selective tranny, excellent trailer brakes, and nerves of steel. DO NOT TAKE THIS ROUTE WITHOUT MILES AND MILES OF MOUNTAIN DRIVING EXPERIENCE.
