Best route towing 29' to Isabella lake. 5 or 14 to 178.

Heading to headquarters campground north of Isabella lake next week.
Towing my 29' 5th wheel toy hauler.
Starting in rowland heights (near Anaheim, diamond bar, west covina).

Should I take the 5 or 210 to the 14 to the 178 west?

Or the 5 to the 178 in Bakersfield?

I don't mind a longer drive if it is an easy tow route.
From what I have researched, it sounds like the 14 to the 178 would be a easier drive.

Thank you for your time.

Check you gas buddy app for current prices. You know your range in miles.

It kills me that fuel in Mojave is cheaper than fuel at home in L.A. county. I always fill up there on the way home.

  • 14-178. Watch speed thru Mojave (it's a CHP training area, so they write a LOT of tickets for practice). Once over the top of Walker Pass, watch your speed on the downhill side. BELIEVE the yellow speed signs. If you're in the market for a steak dinner, McNallys for sure! Call (760) 376-2430 for reservations and to make sure they're open since this Covid thing....
  • Pretty comfortable, I've been towing for ten year. 2003 dodge 3500 dually towing my 29' toy hauler on its first trip.(new tires, checked bearings and suspesion)

I will be leaving Monday morning around 6 am or earlier.
Google maps says the 5 to 14 to 178 is only 18 miles further. (or 210 to 5 to 14).

I'd rather take the 14 to 178 if its a nicer road that will be easier on the truck and trailer and only 18 miles longer. I'll try the other route another time.

Best place to grab some diesel on this route?
Any dump stations in Kernville or along this route?

Thank you for your time. I really appreciate it.
  • I think it depends on your comfort level. I have driven 178 for almost 50 years and have seen semis with 45 foot trailers. You will be on lane next to the canyon wall and there are rock overhangs. Some are painted because they have caused trouble in the past. I have seen awnings laying on the roadside from hitting the wall. I towed my 38 foot fifth wheel behind a crew cab dually and had no trouble.

If you are doubtful, the 14 to 178 is a much nicer road. It is a long steady pull from the 178/14 junction to the top of Walker Pass. You will come into the lake area and turn right on Sierra Way to go through Kernville.

It really depends on the day and time you leave. The hellish LA traffic could make you regret your decisions. The 210/14 will have a lot less traffic at all hours of the day.
  • The 5 in OC is nice. The 5 in LA Co. isn’t nice. Take the 210.
