Carlsbad NM to Big Spring TX
Google maps gives me a couple of options: NM/TX 176 via Andrews or US62/180/87 via Hobbs and Lamesa only 15 miles further. Any particular reason to go with the longer route other than wider should...

I drive 176 between Carlsbad and Eunice every couple of weeks. The 10 miles on the West end was just rebuilt within the last year and is in great shape. The 10 miles on the Eastern end to Eunice is also a good road. The biggest problem is the middle 10 miles or so that is not in very good condition and some spots have zero shoulder. On the positive side, with the oilfield situation so depressed there is much less truck traffic.
The extra few miles through Hobbs is not a real issue if you are concerned about the two lane with no shoulders.
