Carlsbad. NM to Jacksonville FL I-10 or I-20?

Hi Team,

Getting ready to leave Carlsbad, NM heading to jacksonville, FL. Looking at the maps, there is only about 70 miles difference between the northern option I-20 and the southern Option I-10.

Any inputs and thoughts on which would be best this time of year would be appreciated.

Looks like less construction on I-20.

Thanks
Dan
  • I-10 on the west side of Houston is one of the best freeways in Texas. On the East side it's older and not quite as good. At mid-day you will have no problems. There are other routes but I-10 is the quickest way through unless you get caught in the morning or evening rush hours.
  • Dallas area traffic is worse than I10. Mid day you can blow right thru Houston. I have used both and prefer I10.

x2. That part of I-20 in Louisiana is terrible!

is it bad enuff to justify taking I-10 and dealing with the cities (San Antonio, Houston, etc.)?

    thanks team...I-10 it is...

humm....I need to rethink our approach, those parks look great...
  • I got here too late, but for others who might be considering such a choice:

I-20 will bring you through East Texas, the most beautiful part of the state and entirely different from anything on I-10. There are rolling hills, pine trees, and lakes with some really nice state parks and COE parks.

    Tyler State Park

    Daingerfield State Park

    Caddo Lake State Park

    Brushy Creek COE

Also I-20 makes a southern pass around Fort Worth and Dallas which allows traffic to keep moving at normal freeway speed. I don't think the same thing can be said about San Antonio and Houston, not to mention Beaumont and Lake Charles.

There is the option to take I-49 at Shreveport and "dive down" to I-10 and Layfayette, LA which gives one the best part of both worlds. We often do take the highway down from Jackson, MS to Mobile, but we do that because we also like that drive, not because it is the only way to go.

If one does go down I-49 from Shreveport, there is the option to visit Nachitoches.

    Nachitoches

And around Layfayette you are in true Cajun country.

  • Yeah the trip between I-20 and I-10 at the end is slow and on secondary roads. We take I-10 unless we intend to head further north on the west end of the road.
  • I always take I 10 all the way. I 20 will take you to Jackson , Miss and then you need to cut down to I 10 any way. I 10 to Louisiana.... at Baton Rouge take I 12 east back to I 10 at Slidell unless you want to go through New Orleans on I 10.
