Carson City ==> Lake Tahoe ==> Truckee CA

Has anyone taken US 50 to RT 28 and then RT 89 route from Carson City to Truckee, CA? I am specifically interested in a 40-42ft diesel motorhome and was wondering how hard of a climb is the US 50 portion of the drive. I know the RT 28 & RT 89 part isn't that difficult but am interested in the US 50 part.

The route through South Lake Tahoe isn't a good choice now due to numerous construction delays and rough road. Also, it is the longer route so it's not in consideration as far as I am concerned.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.
  • Thanks for the replies. Decided to spend a night in Reno and then it was easier to get on I-80 W and all went well. Was going to spend two nights, but they were calling for snow in the Sierra Mts and didn't want to sit in Reno any longer.
  • I know that one road near the hot springs states "16% grade ahead" but that was when I was there July 4th weekend back in the 80's. Avoid that one, even if they do allow vehicles over 40' long now! I think that I was driving from Grover Hot Springs toward Stockton.

Highway 50 is great from Carson City to Lake Tahoe and on to Sacramento. Many tour busses take that route daily. I have taken it many times as well.

    Good luck!

    Fred.
