Cell Phone Service in the Maritime Provinces

Well I thought I had cell phone usage addressed for my 3 month trip to the Maritime Provinces with Verizon this summer but when I contacted them to change my cell phone coverage to include Canada/Mexico I was informed they had just changed their programs. The bottom line is it will cost me $40 more per month to have the Canadian coverage than they had proposed just 4 weeks ago (the plans they had just dropped). In addition when I returned to the States and have the Canada/Mexico feature discontinued, it turns out I can no longer go back to the Nationwide Talk plan I had, it has been discounted. I then need to move to a new plan called Share Everything. Oh by the way that new plan will cost me $26 more per month than the Nationwide program I originally had. Because of the huge increase cell coverage cost, A) when I am in Canada and B) when I return to the states, I am looking for advice on getting a cell phone perhaps a prepaid one while I am in Canada. Does anyone have suggestions for a cell phone plan/company while I am in the Maritime Provides? All I am looking for is a cell phone to make calls--emergency and RV camping ground reservations so the usage would be minimum each month. Any suggestions would really be appreciated.
