Cell phone translator - holy mole!

Recently, I installed Google Translate app on my cell phone to try with my Mexican (no english) cousin in law.
It was astonishing!
The app can translate "live". You speak into the cell phone and the phone "speaks" the translation. At the same time, it provides a screen print of the translation. Works both ways; english to spanish and spanish to english.

Cousin took to it right away and we had a blast. Where there was previously only my belabored spanish, we began conversing back and forth and both of us became more adept at attempting to speak each others language without the translator.

Furthermore, while visiting an English only museum in Phoenix, cousin pointed the phone camera at printed information, taking a photo of the print information - which Google Translate then translated into a screen print in Spanish.

The future is here!
(The Universal Translator of Captain Kirk's Star Trek got nothin' on us.)
  • As an almost deaf Spanish speaker I just downloaded and tried the app on a Galaxy S4 and in my case this app promises to be a life-changer. It is limited to 5-seconds voice input per segment.

    Absolute KUDOS!!!
  • I just downloaded today and showed it to my Spanish speaking and English speaking friends, it is amazing and will prove to be a useful teaching tool to learn a new language for many people.

    That sounds great.

At a recent family gathering my grandson-inlaw, part Mexican said that in Spain, they speak Mexican. :S
  • Yeah it works pretty well.
With the camera you dont even have to take a pic, it translates the image live on the screen.

You can also download languages in case you dont have cell service.

I use it for parts and manuals from Japan, its amazing.
  • I guess now we need a cell phone!!!! (kidding, just need to learn to do more than make calls)
