Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel

Planning on heading across tomorrow. For the unfamiliar it is about 20 miles of open ocean w ith 2 tunnels.

The issue is high wind. Restrictions start kicking in at wind exceeding 40. We have crossed many times before but never in any wind worth talking about.

Any wind directions that should be avoided? We are southbound.
  • Any winds except tailwinds should be avoided. Crosswinds will blow you into the drink, headwinds will suck fuel out of your tanks faster than several bullet holes.

Best of luck, enjoy your journey, and drive gently so you can enjoy the crossing.
  • We are in the other end of Virginia and we are taking our fifth wheel to a campground tomorrow to begin our camp hosting duties this weekend. I am worried about the 30 miles we have to drive, if the wind is as bad as it has been today.

I think I would avoid driving the CBBT tomorrow if at all possible.
  • They won't let you cross if the wind is too bad - I think the limit is 35 mph, but it is probably on their website. We have had to wait a day twice coming north, and early this February headed south. They have big parking lots on both sides (the one on the North side is bigger) and will let you dry camp there, or there are private campgrounds on both sides too ...

If they say it is OK to go, it is OK to go. Now that it is 2 lanes each direction, you can take it as easy as you want - and there is no wind in the tunnels!
  • Forcast for wind west gusting mid 20s. Don't like the direction but been in worse.

Nice run across. Super great visability today.

    Great news!

We will be heading that way next month and plan to cross instead of going around (hate the DC area traffic).
  • VeeByes, have a safe and enjoyable trip. Met you fine folks a couple of years ago at the Prospector in Ely, NV. We are in Benson, AZ. waiting to slowly head north.
