chicago area guidance
I will be traveling west on I 90 from NY State on my way to Yellowstone. Is there a better way around Chicago than staying on I 90? I have a Class A gasser towing a jeep. Appreciate the help.

There's really only 2 ways around Chicago from that direction due to Lake Michigan. Going west bound, there aren't many tolls either.
You could go I-80, but that's out of the way.

Learn how to use this site. You'll learn to love it.
It should give you travel times with construction areas flagged.
Check the boxes for WEATHER.
Move the departure times up or down and see how that changes driving time.
zoom in and DRAG the line from one road to the alternates and see if that gives you a better travel time.
Do a NY city to Cody WY and see what you get... then do a Porter, IN to Rockford, IL and see what you get.
It gives you current weather and current alerts.

No, no, you don't want to stay on 90! That will take you directly through most of the metro area. If you're insistent on taking 90, at least take 80 west to 39, then take that north to Rockford to catch 90 again. Personally, I would stay on 80 and take either 35 or (better yet) 29 back up to 90. The unknown variable here is construction. My $.02.
