Coleman Lantern in mid-May - early July?

We're starting to look for things to leave home from the usual stuff in our truck camper. On a trip where we board an Alaska ferry in Prince Rupert in mid-May and continue from Haines to Denali, etc., will there be a need for a Coleman lantern? We're not the night owl types.

Any other ideas to save or increase space short of pulling a utility trailer?

Thanks!
  • We've not needed a lantern on any of our trips. A flashlight covers off the occasional night time trip to the outhouse. Headlamps are handy too, keeping the hands free.

Here at the cabin power goes off often in the winter. I have a couple of battery-operated lanterns that are smaller than a soup can when stored that also throw a lot of light (80 lumens). Legs fold down for table top use or it can be hung from a hook. Efficient on the batteries too. Can't think of when I last changed the batteries!

  • Leave it at home. Those super bright things are horrible anyway.

The lack of darkness takes some getting used to. 10:00, it is still very bright & you discover that you have not eaten yet because your body is on daylight time instead of clock time.
  • In stead of a lantern, make sure that your window shades really block out the light.
  • I bought very nice compact LED lantern that is smaller than my fist. Whats the big deal deciding to bring one?
  • I wouldn't be without a small flashlight on such a trip (or on any trip, really). But a lantern should not be needed, especially considering how long the days get that far north.
  • I can't imagine that you'd need one, but there's nothing that beats a bright lantern in the dark. By the time June rolls around, you'll have to stay up pretty late (or get up pretty early) to experience much dark.

I wouldn't worry about bringing one up...if you determine you need one, you can get them at almost every corner store in AK.
