Crossing the Border at San Luis?

Can anyone give me an idea on how the crossing is for big rigs going into the USA? We are in Puerto Penasco and thinking of taking the coast road next week. Would we use the new truck crossing? Appreciate any comments..Thanks
  • A few years back, we had a bad attitude from HS at the Sumas. WA crossing. He said he didn't agree with "us people" going to the US for so long. He said we could see everything we needed to see in the USA in 6 weeks ! Apparently thought we were towing a Lear jet !
When we told him that most of the time would be spent in Mexico, he didn't believe us. I think the attitude is acquired in training ? RYV
  • MK2 you are right that it is a shorter drive, but 120 more Mexican miles. I calculate about 50 miles over all longer going through Lukeville into Yuma. San Luis is about 20 miles from Yuma.
We have never waited more than 20 minutes at Lukeville, there have been a couple times we drive right up no line.
Just our reasons for using Lukeville.
    Glad you crossed safely.
  • We crossed at San Luis yesterday, it was some holiday for the Mexico side of the border so consequently there was more traffic, although we were on the USA side in a hour and 2o min.
The US side took about 20 min. it looked like there was some sort of new training being conducted.
If you figure 80 miles closer to Yuma through San Luis, it would take about an hour and a half longer to drive through Lukeville so yesterday wasn't that bad.
  • Forgot to mention we have a 40' motor home towing a Silverado with a Yamaha Rhino in the truck..
  • We crossed at Lukeville for years but we started crossing at San Luis about 4 years ago and will continue.
Granted the wait time is longer through San Luis but if you are going back through Yuma you save about 80 miles. We always cross on Sat. and the longest wait was 45 min. Homeland Security are crabby to deal with sometimes but it is short lived
We will go back this coming Mon. so it might be a longer wait will know soon enough.
  • Thank you to all for your responses. Based on this info we'll be crossing at Lukeville...especially from Mexicoruss who lives here and would have very current info.
  • I concur - south bound San Luis is fine, Northbound sucks. Long lines and nasty homeland security guards. It is a more commercial crossing whereas Sonoyta/Lukeville is a tourist crossing. Totally different attitude. Any time savings or mile savings to SoCal is diminished by the border wait.
  • I have crossed in an auto and would definitely not recommend a large RV. take Lukeville
  • We crossed there "one" time and never again. LONG wait time and nasty attitude towards RVers by the DHS people. NEVER had any problems at Lukeville, so we now just go back to Lukeville. Heard the exact same thing from at least 3 other folks that have crossed there this year.
