Crowsnest Highway, Alberta Canada

Hey All,

Planning on 2014 Epic Summer Trip to Glacier National Park. In July, we are interested in travelling from Whitefish up into Canada on Hwy 93, then turning right onto Hwy 3 (Crowsnest Highway) that runs east to Pincher Creek, then on to Hwy 6 down to Waterton.

We will be pulling a 28' trailer and I know to fill up on gas whenever tank is at 50%.

Has anyone done this route and can offer advice on the road conditions, grades, neat campgrounds, etc?

Thank you!

Samantha
  • Mountain Shadows just south of Sparwood on 3?

As a tent camper I found it be ok, but not special. Highway was a little too close (especially at the north end), and hiking options more limited than a provincial park. But for a full service community campground it's a good choice.
  • Hi Samantha,

It is an easy pull. Lots of places to stop and explore. I love the campground at Sparwood.
  • That's an easy route. The pass on the provincial border is so gentle you'll barely realize you are crossing it.

Look up the BC Provincial Parks website. There are several good ones along your route. There are also some in Alberta just as you cross the border (well, more like road side 'rec sites').

Fernie is a ski resort town. Sparwood is a company town - for coal mines in the mountains above. Near the turnoff to Hwy22 is Lundbreck Falls. It's a nice lunch spot, and some camping.

In Alberta stop at the Frank Slide Interpretive Center.
