Dallas Fort Worth

I always use I-20 to bypass Dallas-Fort Worth. It skims the southern edge, goes through some of the suburbs. At busy times of day it will get congested around the intersections with the North-South expressways and the loops, more so around Fort Worth, which has more sprawl to the south (Dallas sprawls north).

I am not aware of construction right now on I-20, not up on plans for this fall. I-20 should be passable (unless closed by a wreck, which can happen anywhere, anytime). Texas doesn't usually close trunk highways for construction, which tends to take place year-round. They do sometimes close urban expressways overnight. There is not a summer road construction season, it the way there is further north.

Memphis to El Paso, I probably would not get that close to Metro DFW, taking either Tx-34 down from Greenville to connect with I-35 East at Italy, or be on a diagonal route from east Texas to connect with I-35 at San Marcos, to avoid Austin. Congestion for Austin can make Metro Dallas look like a breeze.

US trunk highways and state highways in rural Texas are usually pretty good roads, although you have to slow down for the towns and work out the bypasses for some of the small cities. Another route I've used, TX-19 is a good connector from I-20 at Sulphur Springs to Athens, where you can pick up TX-31 to Waco, mostly divided highway. But from Waco you still get to drive through Austin.

San Antonio, if not a busy time of day, the FM-1604 loop around north and west sides can work pretty well, I used it often when my daughter lived just inside that loop. Other 1604 sections, west and south sides, are slow. I-410 loop tends to be more congested around the interchanges.

Take I=30 to New Boston Tx, exit on highway 82 and take to Gainesville Tx, pick up I-35 to Denton, then I-35 south to loop 820 in Ft Worth, then I-20 west.

Good drive. and Dallas sucks on traffic.

A couple of weeks back we came from Amarillo on Hwy 287 to Ft. Worth and got on Interstate 20 and then east to Shreveport. Then Interstate 49 south to jump on Interstate 10. Not any noticeable construction on those roads. Only problem area we found was in getting through Baton Rouge on 10, a major stop and go situation, as traffic was backed up for a mile or more west of the Mississippi River bridge.

I 20 stays far enough south of both Dallas and Ft Worth to keep the traffic sane most of the time. We go through there a couple of times a year and never have had a problem. The roads in Texas are just well maintained for the most part. Hard to find a bad highway in that state.

Just towed thru there from I-35E up to I-30 and no construction in that section. I-20 east from there not sure, I know there was some but traffic has usually ran somewhat normal. Now normal on I-20 will include a parking lot on occasion, but is nothing new for a major city. I have towed thru various sections or DFW many times and it is really not that big a problem, just take your time and keep a cushion. Our interstates including the freeways thru the cities are usually wider then a lot of places which makes it nice.

Same as I would suggest...from 2 people that live here. No DOT report required.
It really misses all of the congested highways.

Coming from Memphis, you would come in on I-30 to I-635. Take I-635 south a short distance to I-20. Then I-20 west across the south side of Dallas and Ft Worth. Although there are always random areas of construction on any given day, I don't think there are any major construction projects on that route.
But don't do it during morning or afternoon rush hour.
