Don't drive through south Louisiana

Just a word of warning, areas of I-10 are closed, and almost all of I-12. Lots of other roads too.

The authorities are recommending traveling through the state on I-20. I-59 in Ms is open, so you can head south there.

Things will probably be ok in a few days, at least the interstates will be open. Check 511LA.org before heading this way.
  • Well, looks the planned ramble around south Louisiana in mid-September probably isn't going to happen what with flooded campgrounds, flooded restaurants and road washouts. It's just awful for them.

We're headed from Texas to Florida and we don't do interstates if we can avoid them, so Plan B is to pick US 84 at the Red River and head east on 84 to Opp, Alabama and then turn south into Florida.

Any gotchas or serious problems along this route? Thanks.
  • We have made that US 84 route several times by choice. It is for the most part a good highway. I don't see any warnings to make. We used it last in February of this year--with no trailer brakes (long story not relevant here). That was from Alabama to East Texas on our way home. Took that route to stay off interstates. All was well.
