Durango to Flagstaff-hwy 160

Going from Durango, Co. to Flagstaff, Az. Per my atlas, hwy 16o is pretty well a “scenic” route. Has anyone taken this route and is it worth not dropping down to I-40? The route looks pretty desolate so a small concern would be if I developed motorhome mechanical problems.

Thanks, Richard
  • Thanks for all the info. Will definitely take 160 instead of I-40.

  • Started driving it in 1964, a lot more traffic today, but still drive it.
Stop at Red Lake Trading Post and look around. Maybe you need a bale of hay or a milk bucket.
  • We've done both several times. It's not desolate; it is well traveled. It just depends on whether you want to do it leisurely and get in some great sightseeing. Four Corners is fun, Monument Valley is quite a way off the highway but well worth it. Cortez has wonderful local produce at the Saturday farmer's market, petroglyphs, and outstanding pie (The Pie Maker Bakery). And we get our fry bread at the little stand at 4 Corners. Caution - they only show up to sell during busy times.
  • I'd pick 160 any day over I-40. sure it may take a few hours for road service to show up out there, but it may take just as long for them to show up on I-40.
You didn't say, but 160 is going to end where it hits 89 and you'll be on 89 for the last bit into Flagstaff.
  • Take Hwy 160 as it will go thru 4 corners and near Monument Valley. You will enjoy the desert scenery. Stop for fuel in Kayenta and for lunch try some Indian Fry Bread. When you are traveling thru the reservation, be sure and be very respectful.
