Eastern NC to Maine, 4th of July

I'm doing some advanced planning, looking at routes, stops and sights to go from Eastern NC to the Maine/Canada border. I'm a retired Coast Guardsman and can take advantage of Famcamps along the way. I would look to go up Del to the PA line then ?? Any advice would be appreciated.
