Flying From Guadalajara to Guatemala

We are kicking around the idea of flying into Guatemala this winter for a week or so while in Mexico. Has anyone flown from Guadalajara to this country. If so what are the costs for flights and could you recommend a few hotels in Guatemala City.
  • Yeah! Continental. If you don't like the movie, you can watch the one on the plane next to you...

I was sorta thinking the OP had in mind flying into Guat, then overnighting after clearing customs, and immigration. Then boogeying on the next day to wherever. Guat City to Pana is not a commuter grade journey.
  • Don't know how this works compared with other search methods but I have been using ITA for years - but not from Guad to Guat. Google bought ITA (which I believe some MIT guys created) and Google is in the process of remodeling the concept so you see departure and destination on a map along with prices. But the site is not fully operational yet though they do have some things done - not Mexico and Guatemala though. So if you haven't you might take a look at the ITA site.

  • I flew from Monterrey to Houston and then on to Guatemala on Continental. I don't like that airline or their service. It was fine though, I just have a grudge against them. Sourpuss flight attendants.

I didn't get out much because I was working there but what I did see I loved. Can't wait to go back. If you don't want to take your TC, take a bus and enjoy the sites. Cheaper and a lot more fun. Hotels are not expensive and the food is pretty good although nothing compared to Mexican.

Well, Kayak can find Aeromexico. I thought there were some little known smaller/cheaper carriers as well, but on that distance there can't be anything too small, I guess.
  • Guatemala city is a bit of a hole & dangerous at least in zone 10. I would look at Antigua or Panajachel on Lake Atitlan.

I have used this place twice, clean & friendly and fairly close to airport

    There is this site:

    Flights: http://www.kayak.com/flights

Make sure you click on "+/- 3 days", prices may vary for different dates, depending on God knows what. Normally, 6-7 weeks in advance is enough. Farther in advance is not necessary, and closer than 2-3 weeks to departure prices start climbing.

Un-click "Choose sites to compare" at the bottom - Kayak usually finds a better price than Expedia etc. You might find better prices on less known small local carriers not shown in Kayak, can't suggest any, maybe locals would chime in. In Europe small local carriers often have horrible surcharges for luggage and/or fly only on certain days of the week, can't say about S.A.

Playing a devil's advocate here, - why don't you register and ask a question to expats at Chapala forum? Guadalajara is their backyard, so to speak.

    Hotels: Tripadvisor

Check the reviews and photos and decide for yourself. "Sort by Rating" is not always useful, as there seems to be different "rating" depending on the price bracket, i.e. there can be 5 star rating for a simple hotel and 2 stars for some upscale place that is likely better, but people paying that much expected more, so they rated it low.

Pop-up windows on this site are annoying, but I don't know a better source.
