- garyhauptExplorerNow a fire in the Chena Hot Springs is forcing closures.
Gary Haupt - garyhauptExplorerAlaska fires to date, this year.
and this...
Due to the close proximity of the Anaconda Creek Fire and extreme weather conditions, Alaska State Parks has closed trails and backcountry public use cabins in the Chena River State Recreation Area along the north side of Chena Hot Springs Road.
The closed trails are the Compeau, Stiles Creek, Stiles Creek Extension, Chena Dome, and Angel Creek Hillside trails. The closed cabins are the Colorado, Stiles, Upper and Lower Angel Creek cabins.
Alaska State Parks is in the process of posting the closures at trailheads, closing gates, and cancelling cabin reservations. Campgrounds, road-accessible cabins, and all trails on the south side of the road including the Chena River remain open.
This temporary restriction will be lifted once area fire danger diminishes.

- We're in Steward right now, arrived late this afternoon, weather is beautiful, heading over to Hyder in the morning to try to get some bear photos.
- ChiefelectusnExplorerWe are at Denali and we had rain all last night and until about noon today. This should at least temporarily help with the dry conditions.

The state of Alaska suspended the sale and use of fireworks indefinitely in the MatSu (Anchorage, Wasilla, Palmer area), Northstar (Fairbanks area) and the Kenai Peninsula Boroughs.
The state has also banned all open fires - that includes cooking, warming and signaling fires - in the MatSu and Kenai Borough areas. This ban is in effect on both private and public land. People can still use a gas grill, but no open fires.
Stay safe out there! - dahkotaExplorerAt the last minute on Monday, we came all the way down to Homer rather than stopping at Skilak Lake - the weather in Homer was better. (Nobody told the people here in the city campground not to have campfires - they leave them burning and go to bed.)
Now we are debating about when to leave and where to go. We will probably decide tomorrow, based on what the fire is doing. Maybe make our way to Captain Cook SRA. Skilak Lake seems out for the near future...
