Galax Va from Chattanooga

Question

We 're thinking of leaving the Savannah area, going to Warm Springs GA, then up to Chattanooga and ending up in Galax Va for the Fiddlers Convention.
Anyone have an opinion about Va Route #58 from I85 east to to Galax? Is this a reasonable road with a 35'Class III and car? Google takes you up to I-77, then south towards Charlotte and then west on Rt 58. Seems like a long way around.

Any tips for this trip would be appreciated. Good parks, restaurants, fun places etc. Two retired adults with 3 weeks to fill.

Getting off I-81 around Chilhowie, Exit 35, VA-107, Hwy 58 will take you up, down, around and thru the Mount Rogers Rec area. Very scenic, about 12 miles shorter, but takes nearly 15-20 minutes longer in a MOHO. I-81 to I-77 is an 11 mile longer, easier drive on cruise control with cheaper fuel available in Wytheville, VA. I like the scenic road better, but time isn't an issue, whereas exploration is.:)

Let me suggest you use http://www.mapquest.com/ for routing. You can click and drag the line to different routes to see the variances in time and distance.

Google has never been accurate for our trips. We've had far better accuracy with http://www.mapquest.com/
