Great River Road: Part III

I saw there was some talk about the Great River Road in two other threads from a quick search, but the info was a bit sparse.

I must ask has anyone done that trip yet? Tips? Ideas? Thinking of doing that route for fun on a trip up to Wisconsin to catch a car race. I figure I will take the interstate to Memphis, coming from Florida, then do the Great River Road from Memphis to Southern Wisconsin.

I do not have endless time to wander, but have a few days. I should get to Memphis around evening Saturday and looking to be in Wisconsin by Wednesday.

Thoughts?

Thanks for the information. Always much appreciated.

I am not doing this trip until August, but I will keep an eye on the weather up there for when it is my time to travel. I am still in the planning stages of figuring out how I want to get from Bradenton, Fl up to Road America in Plymouth, WI. I have four to five days to wander my way north and I am thinking of ideas and routes.

I've been on parts in IL from St. Louis to Grafton, Quad Cities to Dubuque, IA then sections in WI. A wonderful trip, but I'd avoid it at this time (if that was your plan). With the rain we've had, the Mississippi is above flood level in many places and parts of the road are probably closed.

Seems like a long way to go, by our driving standards. The Great River Road is not a fast way to travel - you do have to slow down for small towns (which can be fairly numerous) It's a delightful trip (have been only on parts of it in IL & WI) but not even close to interstate speed.
