Heading to Kansas from Ny

Hi heading to Kansas in Sept, what would be the best route
78 to 70 or 80 west to 70 .
Time wise is about the same but not sure how the roads are .
And what would be good spots to stay overnight .
Any info is appreciated.

I80 west around Chicago to Joliet can be very congested depending on the time of day. Be very careful around Joliet as that stretch of I80 is known to have a large number of fatal accidents (one of the highest in Illinois). I would use I70 if it is not out of your way
  • Martha,

NY (assuming New York state) is a big place and your starting point could well have an affect on my response.

  • Martha62 wants a comparison of the road conditions on the routes (78 - 70 vs 80 - 70) through Pennsylvania and Ohio. She won’t be anywhere near Chicago.
  • We always take the interstates as being the fastest way to get anywhere. Of course, they are all in horrible condition as Congress will not authorize the repairs of roads and bridges.
  • We just traveled last Saturday from Indianapolis to Kansas City, Missouri (I-70) straight through. We were pleasantly surprised the conditions of the roads. The only rough area was about a 50 mile stretch in Illinois around the Effingham area. The rest was good. Even Indiana! I can't account for the rest of I-70 at this point. It was just an oddity we took the Interstate. Almost always, we avoid Interstates.

    We're hear for another week.
