Last Sept we took Hwy 49 north from Jackson to I-80 at Auburn. We are 56ft including a toad on a car caddy. Hwy 49 is a very scenic state hwy, well maintained and meets the width regulations but drives very narrow. What a great racer road on a fast bike or sporty car but there is little or no room on the right past the white line. There are rock walls or a drop off in many places and only few very short places to turn off along part of the route. It was only 58 miles but took us a very uncomfortable 2 hours to make the trip and I don’t mess around. Can you make the drive? Yes. Is it legal for you to drive the hwy? Yes, since we met some commercial traffic going the other way. Will you enjoy it? No. If you do make the drive you will miss all of the good stuff because you will be concentrating so hard just keeping the rig between the lines. Leave the hwy for others to enjoy and not be the inconsiderate RV’er legally driving safely getting in their way. The gold rush towns are fun but take the longer way around. Enjoy the drive.
