Highway 49 from Columbia to Placerville calif

I'm planning a trip in April. I'm going to the gold country on Hwy 49 in Calif. I was looking at the the map and was thinking about going from Columbia to Placerville. The only problem from what I see is Mokeumne Hill it looks to have a few turns. I pull a 30ft Trailer. Is this going to be a problem or is it ok if I just take that part slow. It looks like if I go back to 99 its 80 miles out of my way. Any Ideas thanks.

Just take 49, its really not as bad as some would like you to think. Take your time and pull over for traffic behind you when you can.

An alternative route is for you to head West to Hwy 99, proceed North to Sacramento, Hwy 50 - Lake Tahoe Exit - East to Placerville. It is longer but it is a more straight road route.

If you are not in a hurry, I would take Hwy 49 from Columbia to Placerville, noting the cautions previous writers have written. Good LucK.

I was thinking about that route back to 99 buts it's 80 miles farther. there is a road that goes around the Mokelumne hill It's hwy 12 to 88 then back to 49 its 24 miles longer. I'm not to worried about going slow I just hate to go 80 miles out of my way.

We have driven that road in our TC. One time was enough for me. It looks so short on the map. It is narrow, winding, and slow. If you are not in a hurry, just fold in your mirrors and enjoy the drive.

I think you will be fine. The new bypass around Sutter Creek is a dream. I'm not too familiar with the Columbia area, but the only issue for you I can think of is Logtown Grade between Plymouth and El Dorado. It has a couple switchbacks but should be doable for you. There are a couple turnouts, so please use them if there is traffic behind you. I don't know where you're going in Placerville, but I would suggest you don't use 49 between Diamond Springs and Placerville. There will be some pretty tight turns at stoplights when you get in to town. Use Missouri Flat Rd to get to US 50 to get to Placerville.

Last Sept we took Hwy 49 north from Jackson to I-80 at Auburn. We are 56ft including a toad on a car caddy. Hwy 49 is a very scenic state hwy, well maintained and meets the width regulations but drives very narrow. What a great racer road on a fast bike or sporty car but there is little or no room on the right past the white line. There are rock walls or a drop off in many places and only few very short places to turn off along part of the route. It was only 58 miles but took us a very uncomfortable 2 hours to make the trip and I donโ€™t mess around. Can you make the drive? Yes. Is it legal for you to drive the hwy? Yes, since we met some commercial traffic going the other way. Will you enjoy it? No. If you do make the drive you will miss all of the good stuff because you will be concentrating so hard just keeping the rig between the lines. Leave the hwy for others to enjoy and not be the inconsiderate RVโ€™er legally driving safely getting in their way. The gold rush towns are fun but take the longer way around. Enjoy the drive.

It's a beautiful drive with some fine antiques stores along the way. The only real tight part is the last few miles dropping down into Placerville proper. I've driven it often with a 38ft MH and car in tow and it is by far mild compared to many other places we've traveled.
Happy Trails.
