Hiway 2 Maine

We will be traveling through Maine in a few months and are wondering what it is like from Newport to Bethel. Concerns are; low clearances, extreme elevation changes and tight corners. Our 5er is 36 ft. long pulled with a crew cab, long bed and we are 13-2 tall. Any information you can give us would be very helpful. Thanks in advance.

  • Thank you very much. Sounds like we will be taking Hiway 2. We enjoy seeing more than the interstate once in a while.
  • RT 2 is a very nice drive, with almost all the rough spots repaved, widened, and straightened. It is a little confusing with some tight in-town corners in Rumford and Mexico, but that shouldn't be a deal breaker for you. We last drove it last October both going and coming back from VT to Newport on our trip to Bar Harbor. The actual drive is something we look forward to!
  • Rt 2 was repaved recently and is a good road but somewhat narrow with lots of twists and turns but no steep climbs. A nice drive if you aren't in a hurry. Other than the turnpike or 95, almost all Maine roads are like this. I take this route when I want to avoid the interstates.
