HWY 101 - Astoria to San Francisco - 36 ft 5th wheel
is this possible or is it too big of a 5th wheel
plan on Aug 2014
have a dodge diesel 2012 - 3500 single rear wheel

are there lots of steep hills ...
or just lots of curves ??

in this section we plan on only doing about
250 km a day (180 miles)

day 1 arrive Cannon Beach
day 2 tour around area (Cannon Beach)
day 3 drive to Newport
day 4 drive to Bandon
day 5 drive to Klamath
day 6 tour around Klamath
day 7 drive Humbolt redwood state park
day 8 tour Humbolt redwood state park area
day 9 drive to petaluma
day 10, 11, 12, 13 tour the san fran area

This is exactly where we go. Unless you want to fish, Klamath isn't much. Ancient Redwoods is right along the highway in the midst of the redwoods. There are many gorgeous trails to hike in the immediate area for all abilities and all lengths. It's an excellent area to view the redwoods. Bullards Beach St. Park at Bandon is great as is Bandon itself. You won't encounter any big elevation ups and downs but you will have curves and it's not interstate speeds. You'll do just fine.

For San Francisco we would recommend either Sonoma County Fairgrounds or Napa Valley Expo. Both have full hookups and are very reasonable. You won't have to pull your 5th wheel through the city. Then drive your truck to Larkspur which is on the north side of the bay and pick up the short scenic ferry ride which ends at Fisherman's Wharf. From there you can hook up with the small van touring company for an all-day tour of the city, including across the Golden Gate Bridge and Sausalito for lunch. It's a small group and an excellent easy, relaxing way to see the city. Even our daughter, who lives there, enjoyed the tour. Check online for the ferry schedule and tour schedule and there's hardly any waiting between the two. After the tour take the ferry back to your car:

I stayed an extra few days in Klamath right on the river. The salmon run was on and fun to see some really big lunkers. The site was quiet, peaceful and lovely. And Redwoods NP was very close by. Sometimes a quiet spot is a nice break on a long road trip. It was just one stop during an 11000mi trip to every state west of the Mississippi River and most of the big and busy national parks.

Same on Newport. Beverly Beach SP my favorite. Newport waterfront area a must see. Maybe see Sealions on the pier resting. Visit the Aquarium, Wax museum, and Ripleys. Eat chowder at Moe's and watch your cholestrol Level sky rocket, but so good to eat.

It'a great trip. Enjoy it. I have pulled the same route with our 35'5er.
Going north to south will make it easy to use the pull-offs on the ocean side.
You may want to take some time to drive the Avenue of the Giants while you explore that area.
Lots to see and do in SF !

I did that trip last month, big no way, just another RV coming down the road. To old a driver maybe but not to big.

You will have no problems. There are a few curvy sections, but nothing too difficult to navigate. The road is a combination of 2 and 4 lane sections with plenty of turnouts and scenic overlooks so you can take your time and enjoy.
