Hwy 99 to Stockton instead of the 5

I will be traveling from southern California to Stockton, the last time I took the 5 it was so rough stuff was bouncing out of my cabinets :E

Is the 99 any better?

Thank you..........

    OP Here,

Thank you for the replies, I am towing a travel trailer and I do get into the left lane once in awhile to avoid some of the really bad spots, but I am afraid to stay too long and get a ticket.

I will give it a try and report back next month to let you know how it was.

    Cheers

I don't especially worry about getting a ticket for driving in the fast lane as long as I am not blocking traffic or creating any safety hazzards for other drivers.

  • I drove up 99 last January and the only "bad" section, to me, was going through Merced.
  • A lot of 99 has been repaved and added lanes in higher traffic areas. I think it's MUCH better then I5. Last drove it a year ago. Took 99 down and 5 back up Sacramento to Anaheim and back.
Drove my 2006 Dodge 4x4 diesel with a Lance slideout camper and towed a tandem axle trailer hauling a tractor down, no trailer back.
  • Both are in California and suffer from deferred maintanance. The 99 gives you different scenery. My only hesitation with the 99 is that you pass through more towns, which means you have more situations of merging traffic. Both routes work, and we often switch just to change things up. Enjoy

Hwy.99 is a better choice. If you choose I-5 try to drive in the fast lane as much is safe.
  • Both have some rough spots It's kind of a 50/50 deal as to which is better for multiple reasons (trucks, road condition, construction, traffic, services, scenery...etc.)
  • 99 is slow and has a lot of traffic lights in some sections.
I would take I-5 and stay out of the truck lanes.
