It seems that there is a major sinkhole across the entire highway near Brookings, OR.

Wow, that hole is moving fast.

We figure we can drive 50 miles either way from the campgrounds and explore the entire coastline. Going north we will be stopping in Klamath, Redmond and Cascade Locks. Will be in Oregon about 3 1/2 weeks overall.

If I read the accounts correctly the problems started a month ago with a sink hole in the restaurant parking lot. A company was working on pumping it out and getting at the failed culvert when the downstream end of the culvert failed, creating the large slide that consumed the side road. 101 crosses the culvert upstream, and the holes have eating into the highway itself. In the video link that I posted 101 traffic was being diverted to the center lanes. Since then they have stopped all 101 traffic, diverting it on to the harbor side road (adding about 10 minutes to the drive).

------------

In the latest drone video (youtube) the sinkhole is nearly full of water. It extends half way into one lane of the highway (4lanes). There's a dark strip across the other lanes with an excavator with compactor head nearby. Does that mean they are breaking up the pavement to dig a trench or applying a patch over an already dug and filled trench?

The access road from 101 to the Harbor shopping center is the main sinkhole.....but now it has chewed into the southbound lanes of 101. The detour is Benbow Lane down to the harbor itself then back up just south of the bridge to get into Brookings.

The road will be in decent shape come summer, as I stated earlier ODOT is working hard to keep it as smooth as possible.

Doing 100 miles a day or so is a great plan.

Although this one looks pretty big, it is not uncommon on the coast. So much of it is built right along the ocean, rain and storm tides wreak havoc with anything man made.

Donn0128, one of our favorite parks is South Beach, we come over on HY 18, down through Lincoln City, Depot Bay and Newport, the stretch between Depot Bay and Newport, has about five of those nice slip & Slide areas, when we were there over New Years, ODOT, had done some real nice patch and level work on most of them, not sure how long will last, but pretty nice.

Lbrjet, HY 101 is a beautiful drive, just pay attention to the "Rough Road" signs!!

I hope there aren't too many of those as we will be traveling from Olympia NP down to Redwoods NP on 101. Of course we have several stops along the way, about every 100 miles or so.

The OregonDOT flickr photostream says 'Massive sinkholes have opened up on U.S. 101 near the coastal town of Harbor. Detours are in place.' - plural

From the station photos I'd say its near the Fireside Diner (Harbor Cafe on the map) just above the harbor. From the Sat view it looks like there is a stream running in a culvert under the highway, roads and parking lots. Erosion in and around the culvert could be the cause.

I believe the detour is on OR816 which runs below this area, closer to the port. Portside RV park appears to occupy the lower reaches of this ravine.

Yes, it is a failed culvert under the Diner parkinglot and adjacent roads.

We have not been that far south for several years. Last time I was in Brookings was working at the mill. We really like Salmon Harbor at Winchester Bay. Also really liked the park in south Brookings right on the ocean. What fantastic views.
