I-24 North of Nashville

Heading down to the Florida panhandle from Illinois next week. A good portion of I-24 N of Nashville is closed due to a mud/rock slide. Has anyone traveled this way recently? This is always our #1 route, but now thinking of going through Memphis instead....
Any thoughts, ideas would be appreciated!
  • They are routing around it OK, so traffic is going thru. Probably have it cleaned up in a few days. The slide on I-40 in North Caroline s much worse.
  • From the TDOT website

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Tennessee Department of Transportation crews have a long-term closure in place on Interstate 24 eastbound in northwest Davidson County, where a landslide at mile marker 42 occurred at approximately 10 p.m. on Saturday, February 23.

Traffic on I-24 eastbound is currently being diverted onto Old Hickory Boulevard at Exit 40 to I-65 or Briley Parkway.

The full scope of necessary slope repairs will not be known until material can be cleared from the slide site. A TDOT contractor is preparing to begin this process, but due to the unstable conditions around the area, the work will likely be slow going.

While TDOT cannot give a firm estimate for re-opening at this time, the department advises drivers to plan for the closure to be in place at least a week. Once a repair schedule is confirmed, TDOT will provide updated information.

  • You could get off I-24 at Clarksville and take TN46 (?) to Dickson then I-840 to I-65. They are "red" roads but OK for an RV.

Red roads?? Never heard of that description.
  • Thank you! I think we are going to battle the heavy traffic from IL into Indiana, and take I-65 down. This way we will be avoiding I-24 completely. Nashville traffic is always awful, so we are planning on extra time!
  • The interstate will be closed to at least March 15th according to TDOT as of this afternoon.
  • Avoid the Borman. Take I-57 south then cross over to I-65 on IL-17 or US-24. Both are decent roads with no issues for RVs as far as height or width.
