the best way but a little longer is up 287 to 87 to Newburgh to 84 thru waterbury to 691 t0 91 north to rt 9 south to 95 and up to Mystic...

Parkway to the Tappan Zee and then right over to I-95. It's not good, but it's about the best your going to get IMO. I've used just about every route there is going to visit in New Haven and also in RI.

Depends on where you start in NJ...the Tappan Zee is under construction, so if you take 84 I would go up to the Newburgh Beacon Bridge. That said, the GWB is not bad if you can leave early in the morning....like 4:00 am. If you can get through the Bronx before 6:00 am you will OK with traffic.

As bad as the Cross Bronx can get I'm not sure it's worth it going all the way up to 84....Waterbury and Danbury get clogged with traffic now too.

I-95 is a traffic jam from new York through new haven but it really is one of the few choices if your going to mystic choose your times carefully

Or at least do the Tappan Zee to I-287 and reconnect to I-95 in Greenwich.

This route misses most of the problem areas except Waterbury CT.

I-84 to I-691 to CT 66 to Middletown then CT 9 to Old Lyme then I-95 to Mystic.

between the GWB and the split for the Throg's neck can be horrid but it can be okay. Just depends and there is no rhyme or reason to the backups.
Road itself is much better than it used to be 4-5 years ago.
That said my vote is 84
