What is a good option beside I26 to I77to connect with I81 north from Savannah. Towing 30' travel trailer. I prefer interstates over secondary roads.

you can go up 95 to Virginia, then take rt 17 around Warrenton,Va ,now not an interstate but is a 4 lane divided road all the way to I-26 then 25 miles to I-81....hardly any hills...the first 10 miles off 95 can have some traffic then a great ride thru horse country...Chuck

Depends on how you like back roads and where you are actually starting from and going to. I live in Charleston and can give you several options once I know the above.

Without, assuming Charleston to Staunton, VA, grab 52 in Goose Creek, SC up through Cheraw grabing 1 to I-74 in Rockingham. In Greensboro, NC work your way over to Hwy 29 which will take you all the way up to I64 which you can grab over to I81. About 3/4 of this route is dual lane road and very few traffic lights.

This is our preferred route as well. Cheraw is such a beautiful southern city.

Just curious, but what's your objection to I-26/I-77 to I-81? We run that route a couple of times a year with no significant issues.

There really isn't a better option on I-26 to I-77 if you prefer interstates. The only other practical option would be as jaycocamprs mentioned of staying on I-26 to I-77. Problem with this route is you add a lot of miles (about 100), add Saluda Grade (6% for 3 miles) and still have to climb over the mountain with climb which is just as bad as the one on I-77 at the VA state line.

Only other option would include a lot of I95 which would be much worse because of the traffic.

Just stay on I-26 from Columbia, SC to I-81 at Tri-Cities Tennessee

We used to cut across US 17 in Virginia TO INTERSTATE 66 to 81 we hauled large horse trailer fivers that way.
Since you edited your post to state you want interstates then I95 to I 495 to I83 to I 81.
Not a route I would take but beauty is in the eyes of the beholder
