We will be leaving Pa for Tex on Sat. to avoid rain to the south, we plan to pick up 70 westbound from Ohio to Colorado and then down 25 to El paso.
Construction is everywhere, so I know sooner or later we will run into it. Other than that i would like to get an idea on road conditions.

Hey - I hope you see this in time to avoid too much hassle in the Columbus area...

I'm not sure I follow. But if yo mean to take i71 between Columbus and Cicny - it is horrible. I came home from TN back in June north and there were pot holes big enough to swallow the whole rig. North of Columbus the pavement is a lot newer and in much better shape.

I used this a while back and enjoyed the drive - Map - https://binged.it/2Mf3eMg - Map - really depends on you and what you prefer.

While this route has some Big Cities it avoids the biggest Headaches.

Let us know what you decide,

We went out I-70 when we went to Arizona and Texas in May. The worst part of the trip was coming back. When we went from I-70 in Ohio, to I-70 in Pa, the pa portion to the turnpike was the worst. Other than that,I don't remember any section as really bad.

If your goal is El Paso then head for Wichita at Topeka, KS and pick up US 54. Follow it to I-40 then stay with 54 from Santa Rosa to El Paso. It avoids all the Colorado traffic and stays at lower elevations. No Raton Pass, Glorieta Pass, or Albuquerque traffic either.

^^^^^ This.

I-25 southbound from Wellington CO to Colorado Springs is frequently a parking lot. One accident anywhere, one stalled vehicle and traffic backs up. And even where it's 3-4-5 lanes, it's still a zoo. Guaranteed backup from 120th south to US 36/I-270 interchange, will take about 30 minutes to get through just that portion. Other portions will have similar backups in the Denver area. Then you still have to get south through Colorado Springs and maybe...just maybe..traffic may open up to Pueblo.

Don't know how the roads compare, but you could save about 150 miles and a couple hours by taking I-44 at St Louis down to Wichita Falls and US 277 down to I-20 to El Paso, rather than I-70 all the way to I-25. And avoid some mountains. I-44 does have tolls.

I 70WB from Cambridge to Columbus in Ohio is in good shape. Construction in Downtown Columbus can create tie ups. Try to avoid the Columbus Area going westbound during the AM rush hours 6:30–>9AM weekdays. In the afternoon try to be west of Columbus before 3:30PM. as traffic can get really congested headed into/out of downtown. Especially if there is any rain AT ALL or other accidents. OHGO.com is a good resource.

Edit: On a Saturday you should good for the above mentioned part of I70W except possible delays in downtown Columbus due to reconstruction of the 70/71 “Split”. Can’t help you father west than DT Cbus. Have a great trip!

Just traveled from Indianapolis to Kansas City.

Indianapolis to Illinois, very good. Newly paved. Smooth.
Illinois line to Effingham, is OK, but around Effingham you'll have about 50-60 miles of on-again-off-again construction and bumpy roads. Not bad though.
After that, no problems. Missouri, all good.

But, coming home, we took US 36 through Missouri to Hannibal. Then 72 to 74 and at Crawfordsville, Indiana, took secondary roads home. We missed all the Labor Day traffic this way!
