Interstates in Wyoming

According to the local news tonight, speed limits in selected areas in Wyoming are being increased...to 80 MPH. Interstates affected are I-25 from just north of Cheyenne north to Buffalo, I-90 from the SD state line to Buffalo, I-80 from Cheyenne to the NE state line, and I-80 in the southwest part of Wyoming.

I mention this not to encourage speeding, but to be aware that those smaller cars, trucks, and SUVs will now be going faster...legally. And of course you know that, if the speed limit is 80, then traffic is some areas will likely be moving at 85-90mph. For those of us in motor homes or towing trailers and going significantly slower, just something to be aware of, that some of those dots in the rear view mirrors will catch up with you even faster now.

Of course, that Prevost towing the Beemer mentioned in another post here, will probably enjoy the challenge of driving through Wyoming!
  • If you are towing a TT then the max speed should be 65 mph, with ST tires.

Ah, for the days long ago in Montana when the "speed limit" was "reasonable and prudent." Used to "bury the speedometer" on the '50 Mercury V-8 at 120mph to "blow the carbon" out periodically. Sure ran better after the 25 mile run between Havre and Chinook and back. :B
We used to call that an "Italian Tune-up" back in the day..

I drove the 70 miles between Gillette and Buffalo (I-90) both ways today at 76-77 mph. Two cars passed me going one direction, one car the other direction.

Actually, I drove the 60-mile section between Buffalo and Ranchester at 75-76, and I believe it was only one car that passed me there too.

As you said, not too much traffic.
  • Most of I10 across west Texas is 85 and DPS still pulls people over for speeding. Go figure.
  • Many drivers in West Virginia enacted this speed limit change a few years ago. Of course nobody told the State Police nor did they change the signs, they still say 65 or 70. Everyone just travels at their own pace and make their own judgement as to proper safe speed they should travel. Construction zones are exempt from any speedlimit also. This is why the state tourism slogan is "Wild Wonderful West Virginia"

  • Yep, parts of Utah & Idaho have done the same. I have noticed, however, that very few drivers exceed the speed limit - even at the current 75 mph. Unlike in the east & Midwest, where the speed limits are lower, most people seem reasonably content to drive at or below the speed limit.
