Irma

Just a heads up, hotels/motels are booked up here in Dandridge TN (exit 417 on I-40) That's located where I-40 and I-81 meet. Rooms are getting scarce.

Irma did NOT cause 150 mph winds at Disney World. Disney World is too far inland for a hurricane to remain at category 4 status. The worst to hit Disney World area was Charley in 2004 with 75mph sustained. Heard Irma caused only minor damage, a few areas of Epcot flooded, trees down at Animal Kingdom. Mathew caused some rooms to be flooded at CBR near ours. Numerous people living on the coast evacuated and stayed onsite at Disney knowing the parks were closed. Why? Because its inland and some of the best built buildings.

  • We were at DisneyWorld when Mathew hit. At DW it was far enough inland that nothing major occurred weather wise. Moderate rain and wind but no worse than most any other summer storm. All four parks closed early at 5pm and were closed the next day. All roads were closed, no cars or buses allowed. Guests were confined to their resort hotels. On the first night sit down restaurants were all closed. Only the walk up counter take out restaurants at each resort were open. The lines to get food were around 1 to 2 hours.

On the 2nd night Disney opened up Disney Springs in the evening and provided transportation so guests could dine at the restaurants there. Of course those restaurants could not handle so many people with no other dining options. We skipped the Disney buses and used Uber to get there early ahead of the crowds.

All in all it was a minor inconvenience worth it to be safe. We were there 10 days and the 1 day with parks closed allowed the kids to sleep in late.

Irma is causing Disney to close parks early on Saturday and remain closed Sunday and Monday.
  • I saw a photo on FB showing where they were removing the spires on the different venues.
  • Well, we knew there was a risk, but you have to do what you can with work, etc... We are going with positive attitudes

I'd say it's not the year; it's the month. You picked a hell of a month to visit Florida.
