Lassen to Bridgeport

As part of a 3 week No. Calif/ So. Oregon loop in June, I need help planning the section from Lassen (Manzanita Campground) to Bridgeport. I’ll be in a 34’ class A with a toad.

1) From Lassen, what is 36 east > 89 east > 70 east like (going through Quincy and Portola)? Google maps is telling me to take north 89 > east 44 to Susanville, then hit 395 south. Any recommended dispersed camping near good stream fishing with either route?

2) Further south, I intend to go stop in Markleeville area for a day or two fishing the East Carson River. From Markleeville, Google maps is telling me to take the 88 north (backtracking), to the 395, then south. Is there anything wrong with the 89 south/east from Markleeville, hitting 395 just south of Topaz Lake?

I’ll have several days to make my way to So. Calif from Lassen (no hurry). BLM or forest service camping spots would be great.

Taking 36 from Manzanita would involve driving your rig through the Park on the main road 89. It is a narrow and curvy road. Doable, but you may not enjoy it. Use your toad to explore the Park and see it you want drive your A on that stretch.

While at Lassen, drive over to Butte Lake in the NE corner of the Park. The trail to the top of Cinder Cone is a bit of an effort, but the views from the top are incredible. You are looking down on a surreal and bizarre kaleidoscope of colors in the lava formations below you. Also visit the Subway Cave in Old Station.

The fastest way is 89/44 to Susanville, then 395 south.

89 through Quincy and Portola is a good road. Has curves, like any mountain road, but is plenty wide with shoulders and turnouts. If you go that way, you can visit the Lakes Basin by Greagle. Numerous lakes in a granite setting.

So many campsites, so little time...

SR 89 south from Markleeville is quite a grade both up and down Monitor Pass for any RV. I would backtrack to Minden/Gardnerville and take US 395 south to Bridgeport.

Agreed! And fuel in Minden/Gardnerville is considerably cheaper than anything along 395 as you head south.

From Manzanita campground the two best ways to go would be to travel north to Old Station and take 44 east to Susanville and then south on US 395 to Reno and Bridgeport; or if willing to contend with a fairly steep and long descent down from the summit continue from the campground through Lassen Park and take SR 70 to US 395 to Reno and south to Bridgeport.
