"At the Bay Bridge, tolls are collected in the eastbound direction only.". The toll on the Delaware Memorial Bridge is only collected West bound. You do not have to get on the NJ turnpike to get to US-40 after going over the Delaware Memorial Bridge. I believe US-40 is exit 2, but just follow the signs. You do not want to get on the turnpike. We have taken the ferry many times and it is a nice ride, but is a little price and depending on when you are going you may need a reservation for a large vehicle. There would be one toll North bound on the Garden State Parkway and I am not sure about the Atlantic City Express Way between the Parkway and Atlantic City, but I think there is a toll on that stretch.

I travel the way that the OP stated. You pay a toll on Rt 50 but on the Delaware Memorial Bridge into NJ you only pay when leaving the state. Take Rt 40 in NJ and it will take you into AC. Just 1 toll to NJ and 2 on the way home. Great roads.

Late note here, but for further note, the toll on the DMB is only for those going west.

Also, there's no 'easy' way to get to AC from the DMB, unfortunately. Route 40 is hellish from Pennsville to Mays Landing. Two-lane tractor road, many trucks, and at least one fatal head-on per week. If you go north on I-295 towards Philly, to pick up the ACE there, it adds an hour to your trip, because there is no direct way to the ACE Eastbound from 295 Northbound. You have to get off 295, circle around, and then get back on southbound, to pick up the ACE. And there's a lot of construction going on around there right now.

If I was going from Washington to Atlantic City, here's what I'd do - 50/301 Eastbound over the Bay Bridge, then 50E at the 301/50 split, to Salisbury MD - then north on US 13 to 9, and 9 east to Lewes - then take the Ferry to Cape May, and then a straight shot north on the GSP to AC. It sounds a bit complex, but it's really more pleasant than the 301/896/295/40/322 route. Your only trick is timing for the ferry - get there too late and you sit overnight. :(

take 50 to 301 north. get into Delaware you can stay straight or turn right over the railroad tracks for 896? I forget but I take it every day. you can go to the end there and make a left to avoid rt 1 bridge toll, turn at the wawa. take that up a few miles and stay in left lane for the bridge. you can stay on that rt1 or bear to right. if you stay straight for 13 north its got traffic lights but its slightly faster than bearing right for 295/95. go over bridge and take 295. there are backways to go from there but honestly just pay the toll for the ac expressway. if you want you can go 40 to 322 and that will take you to ac.

MDTA claims that initial round trip tolls (in 1952) on the Bay Bridge were $2.80 per car. Adjusted for inflation that is $24.

Gas was $.25/gal at the time, so the toll was about the same as 11 gallons. Now it's what, about the same as 1 gallon? Guess that depends on how you pay it, whether cash, commuter etc.

I don't believe there are any low bridges along 40 in NJ. Except for a couple dollars in tolls, you should be fine.
