Liberty Harbor to Salem, MA?

We'll be visiting the east coast in our motorhome with plans to travel from Liberty Harbor RV Park to Salem, MA. We would really appreciate routing suggestions from those in the know. Our GPS has some interesting route suggestions that I'm pretty sure are not what we want to do!
  • HadEnough - Your description of travel goals is exactly what we want to accomplish. (We did this exact trip over the weekend. I wanted to get from point A to point B with few tolls, no low bridges and in the minimum amount of time while still having a decent drive away from most traffic.)

Sounds like other posters have provided a good option, however if you have other suggestions based on your recent experience, I'd love to hear them. And thanks in advance for your help.
  • 3x on the Alfredmay route. I don't know what your rig is but the North end of the Garden State Parkway has some arched bridges that bring the inside and outside lane clearances down. I'm at 11 ft. and I'm ok. However if your rig it higher than that be sure to stay in the middle lane. I think the exits are 129 to 145. One has a 13'7" height. If you are around that height, might want to check it out. Other that that this is a good easy route.

This is the most direct route without going thru major cities. It skirts the cities but includes many toll roads. It is not scenic, just an A to B route. If you want cheaper or more scenic I can provide that but it will be longer.

Having made this trip a few times, I can X2 this. You either need to go west to the GSP or over the GW Bridge and onto the Cross Bronx Xway to get to New England. The Cross Bronx may be doable on a Sunday morning, but the rest of the time it's miserable. Also, the Jersey barriers directing traffic to the proper lanes on the GWB tend to take out steps on RVs.

If you do the GWB, propane is not allowed on the lower deck.

  • Nemo,

Without going into particulars because I don't have time,

DO NOT cross the Hudson into NYC. Go north and maybe cross at the Tappen Zee Bridge (I-287) or even go up to Peeksgill and pick up I-84 At Newburgh. That will be NYT tolls to there, but I-84 is toll-free until you hit the Mass Pike (I-90).

  • Depends on what you want to do.

    What is your goal?
