Much as I love the train ride, the road bed is in poor condition and speed of travel is often 7 mph. They have many derailments every year and the owner is trying to sell the line. When there is a derailment you are refunded your ticket price and left to fend for yourself for alternative transportation.

The owner is refusing to transport grain this year to the port. That may mean even less maintenance of the road bed.

If you still want to risk the rail travel. Then only take it going North. I did both ways by rail and no other passengers were on the train going south--so food going south was limited to what they could do in a microwave.

I would fly both ways.

I would advise you to go the Manitoba provincial parks website and advance book your camping sites. They fill up for the entire summer quite fast.
Manitoba also promotes camping and booking sites early in spring.

Heads Smashed In Buffalo Jump is in south western Alberta, quite fascinating if your schedule permits. Cypress Hills Interprovincial Park is quite unique and a wonderful break from miles and miles of FLAT.:B

It can be HOT so plan for that. Also, Head Smashed In Buffalo Jump is a must see.
