Mexican Pets

I read several threads about pets, certificates, shots, and food. We have two cats and plan to travel from Vancouver to Halifax next year.

I'm wondering if Mexican certificates and shot records would be a problem? Our vehicles have Mexican plates as well.

Thanks Moisheh. Long time coming that we finally meet up. We are thinking about a month to get to Vancouver, two months across Canada, and a month to get back home. I know it's not long enough but we aren't fulltimers yet and still have a house and some part-time work. We want to check out Canada and see if it will be a good summer hang out in the future. Opposite of you guys.

  • Thanks everyone. We've never ventured that far and as I said, better safe than sorry. Will do Moisheh. Our first Canadian trip.
  • Chris: Our cat, Sally Mae ( Salome) was a Mexican cat. She only has papers from our Mexican vet but we have never had any problems. But if the Canadian officials find out about your radical politics they might let the animals in and turn you away! Enjoy the Maritimes. If you are coming through Manitoba let me know.

  • We will be traveling for four to five months with the rv in tow. If it has to be less than 30 days, does that mean I would have to, along with my Mexican certicate of health also have to stop and get one in the U.S as well?

I'd rather be prepared than get there and have an issue.
  • We have a Mexican rescue cat. She has travelled with us for 7 years to Newfoundland, Florida, Alaska, and 7 trips to/from Baja. Only ONCE have we been asked for papers (which are from a Mexican vet) and are updated every year by the same vet. Enjoy your trip!

    Dogs and Cats:

If you wish to take your dog or cat from Mexico to Canada, you will have to obtain rabies and other vaccination certificates from a veterinarian. These health certificates must be issued in letterhead paper in Spanish and English or French no more than a week prior to your departure date. For details on what the health certificate of your animal should mention, please visit the above mentionned website. To obtain a travel certificate, you will also need to present a copy of your veteriarian's licence and up-to-date certificates of vaccination and disinfestation for your pet.

Your dog or cat may enter Canada without quarantine if the certificate shows that the animal was vaccinated against rabies not more than one year and not less than 30 days preceding the date of importation into Canada. Rabies vaccination is not recognized if it is performed before the animal reaches three months of age. Fees are payable in Canada for inspection of cats and dogs being imported or returning to Canada.

In Case of Border Crossing by Air from Mexico City: Before your departure, please verify with your airline if they accept transporting animals out of Mexico and their requirements.
At the airport: Take both rabies and health certificates to the International Airport in Mexico City, Gate E, International Arrivals, to obtain the travel certificate (Certificado de Exportación de Animales from SAGARPA).
  • The Canadian government has its own regulations.

Some, maybe all, answers may be found with the Canadian Food Inspection Agency Canadian government webpages end in 'gc.ca'.

All coming to Canada is best searched from Canadian sources. Both Yahoo and Google have Canadian domain search engines, for example: www.google.ca

    Enjoy your visit.
