Montgomery over to 75

I am thinking of a different route to Florida this year to avoid Atlanta. I am thinking on dropping down to Montgomery from Nashville and then heading over to 75. So I am wondering what is the better route from someone who has gone that way lately, 82 or 231/84 or another suggestion?

The last time I was on 231 headed to Panama City I remember a lot of stop lights but I can't remember if that was above 10 or below it. So if you could verify the stoplights that would also help.

When I go to Destin I stay in Montgomery at the KOA off I-65. Head East from there and catch the 331. You drive through some old southern Alabama towns which is likely slower than 231 but is a really nice drive all the way down to DeFuniak Springs. 4 hours from Montgomery and I have toes in the sand

I-65 South, I-85 North, EX #9 Taylor Rd, Turn right and go to end. Turn Left on to Hwy 231. That will go to I-10 East to I-75 If you need a over night Birmingham South in Pelham (just south of B'ham) Deer Run RV Park in Troy and Cherry Blossom RV Park in Dothan are good.


Be aware that Birmingham has a lot of construction going on. Try and avoid rush hour.

It really depends on the starting point. The OP is in Wisconsin. You are NE of Atlanta. The OP will probably come down the length of Illinois, then pick up I-24 to go east to Nashville, where he has a choice of continuing on I-24 to connect with I-75 south at Chattanooga OR he can just get on I-65 south at Nashville and continue down to Montgomery, then Hwy 231, etc. It's a straight shot from Nashville down to I-10.

I also have been caught in too many traffic jams in Atlanta.

GoPackGo, You are spot on about my route and mileage. I also drop down from Madison and take I39, I57, and I24 to Nashville to avoid the Chicago area. The Briley Pkwy around Nashville also works for me.
I like to travel around 65 MPH when pulling and this presents somewhat of a problem in areas where lane position and lane changes are necessary in larger cities. When others around you are going 75 MPH or over, and don't want you in front of them, it seems like driving courtesy goes out the window.

Not a fan of Atlanta, Chattanuga or Nashville but from east central Illinois to Florida Nashville is really hard to avoid. Last year we took I-65 instead of I-75 through Atlanta and avoided Chattanoga also. Still had Nashville but much better than all three. Jim.

Alot of the advise hinges on where the OP is going in Florida.

You are describing a route that adds 60 miles or so of driving to get to Columubus. At Opelika take US 280 to and thru Phenix City and continue on to Cusetta, GA where you make a right turn onto US 27. US280 is four lane all the way, though not limited access, is not a bad drive at all. If you want to avoid a number of traffic lights, From where 280 hits US 80 in Phenix City, turn left onto 80E and go four or five miles till you hit I-185 south. Adds a few miles and eliminates 20 or so traffic lights.

Don't go all the way to LaGrange to catch I-185, way too much driving.

So true. When I go thru Nashville on I-24 I take the Briley Parkway (state 155) around the east side, adds miles but is smooth and has little traffic. I made the mistake in August of going straight thru Nashville about 7 pm thinking there would be little traffic, I encountered a fair amount of traffic, but worse were insanely crazy drivers, and the road surface was horrible. Not again.

Personally I have no issues with Atlanta but for some different scenery try this: From Montgomery take I-85 east to I-185 & go south to Columbus. I-185 S turns into US 27 which is 4-laned to Bainbridge, GA. and on to Tallahssee where you get on I-10. This is an excellent road that has by-passes around most of the small towns. lizzie

I always plan my time through ATL to be early afternoon or around 10:30am. Right straight through and never take the bypass. Have only been slowed down before the bypass or after it joins back in.

The way I go is head to Dothan Then straight south to I-10 Then east to I-75

911, I hear you about Nashville, I have had good luck with taking the Briley Pkwy on Saturday and then going straight through Atlanta on Sunday but, we just wanted to take a different route this year, as we will be traveling during the week instead of the weekend.
