Hwy. 20 off of I-5 is the best RV route. Hwy. 299 out of Redding usually got construction/road repair going on. It is not my choice when towing my 5th. wheel. Some hills and winding curves requiring the use of your brakes and exhaust brake if you have one. Usually has Highway Partol on this road.

10, 15, 210, 215, 15, 395, 58, 99, 7Th standard Rd, 5.
From there just depends on route you favor and traffic.
We've done this route many times to avoid most of Los Angeles traffic.

Pretty much all the roads you'll encounter are used by 18 wheelers. If the road is paved you shouldn't have any issues.

I would avoid Pasadena too. Not that there's anything wrong with the 210, but that's just not the right route.

The 58 from Barstow to Bakersfield is a great road now. Actually, it's the Barstow to Mojave leg that is great now, because that's the part that they widened and improved. From Mojave over Tehachapi to Bakersfield is good too though.

Once you get to Bako, you can pick your favorite route over to I5. The 46 is a pretty good road.

That whole drive should be pretty easy. Tehachapi is the only pass you'll go over, and it isn't bad at all.

Hopefully you're not in it for the scenery though, because most of that route is pretty bland.

This the route I take every year

Tehachapi is a good route year round, unless you hit a freak snowstorm. Even that won’t last long.

Pasadena isn’t bad in these Covid times. Just stay to the right and pay attention where I210 splits with the CA134.

Thank you. I was thinking about going up to the 40 and across. We've gone that way before, just not in the RV.

It has just had a pretty significant overhaul. New tires and brakes. I am not sure about the AC, but that is something we can definitely check on.

Do you happen to know what road conditions are like up around Tehachapi Pass in late March and early April?

BTW Good cooling and brakes???

I've taken 10, 210, 5 midday, not to bad but certainly more traffic.

You can also go up 99 and cut over in Sac.
