Nevada Hwy 50

Looking at crossing Nevada on Hwy 50 that goes from Carson City to Ely and into Utah. Has anyone driven that route and is it a good road? Understand it is "lonesome" and few towns but there seems to be lots of mountain passes. Are they a big problem? Part of a longer trip into California and Oregon. We're pulling a 27' fifth wheel.

Thanks.

One of my favorite roads.

Did it 5 years ago in a 2014 34’ Winnebago. Road isn’t smooth interstate, but very driveable. 2 lane, some roadside rest stops. Do it, worth the drive and it is lonely. Pony express sites along the way too. We stayed at an Ely koa. Was ok. Goin into Utah was beautiful. Our trip was Sacramento to Missouri.

Basin and Range. Nevada has 276 mountain ranges so Rt 50 is up and over, through the valley and over the next range. None of the passes are that high. Austin, Eureka, and Ely are worth stopping and looking around. It is at its most scenic in the spring and fall. Summer is kind of hot and dusty. Snow on the mountains changes the scenery a lot.

I have driven the road around 50 times, maybe more. Keep your tank full but don't plan on buying gas in Austin. Fill up in Fallon and Ely. There are some fun places around Ely, I like Cave Lake St Park and the surrounding ranges for watching deer and elk. Great place for watching birds, especially raptors. Gr Basin NP is not far to the east.

We've been both ways. The loneliest road is an advertising gimmick but it is mostly unpopulated but so are some other highways. Keep your tank over half way and you'll be fine.

I'll be going East to West on it in a few weeks (last day of an upcoming trip). It's an awesome drive, imo. I've done it a few times and while my wife claims there is nothing at all to see, I think it's about the most beautiful place I've ever been. We'll be overnighting in Ely, then heading for CA early the next morning. I'm already looking forward to that morning drive, sun at my back and heading for home. :C

Yes it is a good road but it is known as "The lonliest" road in America for very good reasons. Be sure and gas up before leaving Ely. There are very few places to stop for the night, not much in Eureka. We found a nice little campground just east of Austin.

Lots of mountain passes and you will find yourself well above 6,000+' for most of the drive. Would not want to try it in winter and know that the weather can change very quickly.

It is a great drive with magnificent scenery but be sure your rig is in excellent shape as much of the ride you will have neither cell coverage or much of a shoulder. All in all quite and adventure as it was on my "To do" list for years. We drove our 24' Class C west out of Cedar City and then north on 93 to Ely. That stretch of 93 could easily be condsidered just as lonely as 50.

I hope to get back up that way and ride it eastbound on my motorcycle, probably a whole different ride.
