Hwy. 2 is a pleasant highway to drive. In Kingston I would recommend Rideau Acres C.G. www.rideauacres.com
Kingston has a nice waterfront, some interesting restaurants and old stone buildings. Old Fort Henry is a tourist attraction in the area.

On PEI we have enjoyed staying around the Brudenell area on the east end of the island.
Cavendish is the home of Anne of Green Gables. If you ave young kids they will enjoy this, otherwise it is a major tourist congestion area. We avoid it. Charlotttetown has some nice tourist sites.

Note you want to take the ferry across to PEI and exit using the toll bridge. this is the cheapest way to do it.

Little Kopit on this forum has lived in the area for a few years now. She is an excellent source of information and in the past has posted an extensive list of things to see/do/avoid.

On our way to Bar Harbor area, we stayed at Pumpkin Patch RV Park, near Bangor, Maine. Although it has been many years since we were there, it was a very nice park.

The 401 is one of the busiest highways I've been on. But it's doable.
Watch out for (avoid) 407 ETR which is one of the most expensive toll roads in North America and even worse if you don't have a transponder (extra charges for a heavy vehicle, then a charge for sending you a bill).
It is hard to avoid Toronto if you go this way as it seems to go forever north.

In answer to a response, I need to clarify my question. I travel in a c-class 31 ft Quantum motorhome. I pul a Honda Element behind. We try to always stay in good family campgrounds and we love seeing the beautiful country side. We don't get in a hurry and usually try to spend 6-8 weeks on the road at a time. we want to see and tour Canada then cross over into prince Edward Island, then on to Nova Scotia, then over to Bar Harbor, Me. Any helpful suggestions or places to see are greatly appreciated.

3.78l per US gal. so at 1,27 per gal. a US gallon in Quebec would be $4.80 CAN at 73 US cents per US dollar, that equals $3.50 US!

Maybe my calcs are wrong but here goes! A US gallon is 3.85 liters. At $3.99 per US gallon US$ that is $1.03 US per liter. At our 73 cent Canadian dollar compared to your US dollar that diesel is costing me $1.41 c$ per liter.So that $1.27 Quebec diesel is cheaper!

Almcc-I just checked Gas Buddy for the San Francisco area for diesel and found under $4/gal. Near Quebec City the price was 1.27 per liter. That comes out to over $6 (American) per gallon. That looks like a 50% difference to me. These numbers came from Gas Buddy with the conversion being computed by frugal rv travel.com I did not do the conversion myself.

Hwy 401 can be a "bit of a bear" at times, we live north of Toronto and try to avoid it when we can. Can't speak about LA freeways but transiting Dallas/Fort Worth is a piece of cake compared to the 401.

An alternative is the 407 ETR, a toll road that parallels the 401 to the north. It's expensive, could cost $50CDN or more one way to get across. They have agreements with most states so you will probably get a bill (don't know what happens if you don't pay it, here we can't renew our plates if we don't pay).

Diesel is about the same cost as it is here in California taking the exchange in.

You may want to look at campsites early, the parks get busy in the summer in Ontario, most provincial parks are fully booked in advance. Upper Canada Village is a nice historic stop east around the Kingston area.

When I traveled from Montreal to Niagara Falls, I took Hwy 2 through Kingston. I enjoyed it very much - very pretty.

And in Kingston, you can visit the penitentiary museum (right across the street from the penitentiary) and eat at Chez Piggy.
