Nisga'a Memorial Lava Bed Provincial Park

This park north of Terrace is an exceptionally interesting park that very, very few people visit. The short version of the story is that a volcanic eruption in the 1700s buried about 2,000 people under what is now 39 square miles of lava. If you go, though, do not believe that map that indicates that you can get to the Stewart-Cassiar Highway from there via the Nass Forest Service Road (FSR). Well, you can - I did it a few days ago - but you don't want to. The first 19 km (12 mi) of the road took me almost 2 hours to navigate. It's very narrow, and extremely rough. The other 32 km is much better, what you expect from any FSR. That first 19 km is FAR worse than it was a dozen years ago when I drove it in my Chevy Tracker. But the park really a visit - the 16-site campground is very nice, for $20/night. The photos show that first 19 km - a typical stretch, and one of the few places where another large vehicle can get by. It's a good thing that my wife wasn't with me, or the bruises wouldn't heal until August! :)

  • My wife was through the area with her aunt and uncle many years ago, she still talks about it. Coastal rain forest with some HUGE trees
  • explorenorth...are you talking the Cranberry Junction Rd? From or to 37? If so..too bad about it's condition. When we were last up, during the construction of the tower for the electrification project, that was a hi-speed bit of roadway.

  • Yes, Gary, the road from New Aiyansh to Cranberry Junction. The 32 km from the Kitsault Road to Cranberry is okay, but that first section - omg!
  • We enjoyed Lava Bed Park about ten years ago. Spectacular lava beds not seen anywhere else in Canada, Great Lake for canoeing, an undeveloped hot spring all to ourselves, walking tour to the volcano cone, fascinating Nisgaa villages, a big Nisgaa Nation parliament building and very nice campsite. All well off the busy tourist routes.
  • We were there last summer and were amazed. It is truly a hidden jewel. If I could post photos I would share some of the beautiful crystal clear ponds that result from places where the porous lava allows the underground streams to pop up. lizzie
  • Lizzie..if you would like..I will send you a how-to-post note to you as a pm.

    I ask..some just don't care to.

  • Thanks Gary. I have tried to post several times over the years, never seemed to get the hang of it. I would be happy for another tutorial. lizzie
